The Types Of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Licence
After successfully passing your HGV driver’s test, you will be granted an HGV license. There are two types of HGV licenses, each covering different categories of heavy goods vehicles, and it’s crucial to obtain the correct type for your intended role.
Class 1 HGV Licences
A Class 1 (or Category C+E) HGV license authorises you to operate vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750kg. This category includes articulated lorries, tractor trailers, and multi-trailers, making it suitable for long-haul transport and providing access to a wide range of job roles.
To obtain a Class 1 license, you may need to undergo a medical examination to acquire your provisional license, pass both theory and hazard perception tests, and complete a 5-day practical course focusing on articulated vehicles, culminating in a final assessment.
Recent changes in HGV licensing make it simpler to achieve a Category 1 HGV license.
If your provisional license was issued after November 15, 2021, you can learn to drive an articulated lorry (Category CE) without first obtaining experience in a large rigid lorry (Category C). However, if your provisional license predates November 15, 2021, you will first need to upgrade it accordingly.
Requirements for obtaining a Class 1 HGV license include:
- Age: Over 18 years old
- Health: Good physical condition without any impairments affecting safe driving. A medical examination may be necessary to confirm fitness.
- Theory And Hazard Perception Tests: Successful completion of tests covering road rules, signs, and safe driving practices.
- Practical Tests: This includes the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) initial qualification test.
- Training: Comprehensive training covering safety, vehicle handling, load management, and specific skills relevant to long-haul trucking.
- Additional Endorsements: You may be required to obtain additional endorsements such as the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC).
Class 2 HGV Licences
Alternatively, if you’re not focused on completing long-haul transport runs, or on using articulated vehicles or trailers, you can apply for an HGV Class 2 license.
With a Class 2 (Category C) license, you are authorised to operate vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with 8 wheels or fewer and no trailer.
This license qualifies you to drive category C vehicles – including rigid lorries and delivery trucks – suitable for local and regional deliveries, waste management, and construction vehicles.
What Heavy Goods Vehicles Can I Drive?
If you’re not planning to drive anything larger than a Category C large rigid lorry, you only need to qualify under Class 2.
However, keep in mind that with Class 1, you’ll be limited to driving specific vehicles. The types of vehicles you can drive will depend on the one you used for your HGV driving test.
Passed HGV Class 1 Test In: Large Articulated Lorry
If you passed your test in a large articulated lorry, you are qualified to drive:
- Medium-sized lorry (C1)
- Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
- Large rigid lorry (C)
- Large articulated lorry (CE)
Passed HGV Class 1 Test In: Medium-Sized Lorry
If you passed your test in a medium-sized lorry, you are qualified to drive:
- Medium-sized lorry (C1)
- Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
Which HGV Licence Is Best For Me?
The choice between a Class 1 and Class 2 HGV license depends on your career goals, driving experience, and the nature of the work you seek.
Opting for a Class 1 license is ideal for long-haul trucking jobs involving heavy loads, while a Class 2 license is preferable for local, short-distance, and regional deliveries. Consider your ambitions and driving background to determine the most suitable option for your needs.
