The Types Of Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Licence
If you have passed your test to become an HGV driver, you will have received an HGV licence.
There are two types of HGV licence, which cover you to drive different types of heavy goods vehicles. You will need to hold the correct type of HGV licence for the role you apply for.
Class 1 HGV Licences
A Class 1 (or Category C+E) HGV licence qualifies the holder to drive vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750kg. This category comprises a wide range of vehicles such as articulated lorries, tractor trailers, and multi-trailers.
Class 1 licences are suitable for long-haul transport and offer the licence holder access to a broader range of HGV job roles than a Class 2 licence.
To achieve a Class 1 HGV licence, you may need to pass a medical examination to get your provisional licence. You will then need to pass two tests: a theory test and a hazard perception test. Usually, you will also be required to participate in a 5-day practical course in the articulated vehicle, with a final assessment on the last day of the course.
Due to HGV licensing changes, it is now easier than ever to achieve a Category 1 HGV licence.
If your provisional licence was issued from 15th November 2021, you can now learn to drive in an articulated lorry (Category CE) without having to first pass in a large rigid lorry (Category C). If your provisional licence was issued before 15th November 2021, you will need to first upgrade your provisional licence.
Requirements to achieve a Class 1 HGV licence include:
- Age – Over 18 years old
- Health – Good physical health, with no physical health issues that would interfere with your ability to drive safely. You may need to undergo a medical examination to prove your state of fitness
- Theory And Hazard Perception Tests – You will be required to pass the theory and hazard perception tests, which cover a range of areas including road rules, road signs, and safe driving practices
- Practical Tests – These include the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) initial qualification test
- Training – Training covers safety, vehicle handling, and load management, as well as specific skills required for long-haul trucking
- Additional Endorsements – You may be required to obtain additional endorsements such as the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC).
Class 2 HGV Licences
Alternatively, if you are not intending to do long-haul runs and don’t need to use an articulated vehicle or a trailer, you can apply for an HGV Class 2 licence.
With a Class 2 (category C) licence, you can drive a vehicle over 7.5 tonnes – however, this must have 8 wheels or less, and no trailer. A Class 2 licence qualifies you to drive a category C vehicle, such as rigid lorries and delivery trucks.
Class 2 licences are required for local and regional deliveries, waste management, and construction vehicles.
What Heavy Goods Vehicles Can I Drive?
If you do not intend to drive anything larger than a Category C large rigid lorry, you can simply qualify under Class 2.
However, be aware that under Class 1 you will only be qualified to drive certain vehicles – which vehicles you can drive will depend on the type of vehicle you passed your HGV driving test in.
Passed HGV Class 1 Test In: Large Articulated Lorry
If you passed your test in a large articulated lorry, you are qualified to drive:
- Medium-sized lorry (C1)
- Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
- Large rigid lorry (C)
- Large articulated lorry (CE)
Passed HGV Class 1 Test In: Medium-Sized Lorry
If you passed your test in a medium-sized lorry, you are qualified to drive:
- Medium-sized lorry (C1)
- Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
Which HGV Licence Is Best For Me?
Which HGV licence you should work towards will depend on your career aspirations, driving background, and the nature of the work you’re looking for.
Opting for a Class 1 licence will be best if you want to do long-haul trucking jobs and transport heavy loads. Alternatively, if you want to do local, short-distance, and regional deliveries, a Class 2 licence will likely be the better option.
