Understanding HGV Licences
To drive a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), you need the appropriate HGV licence.
There are two main types of HGV licences – each covering different vehicle categories – and it’s essential to have the correct licence for the role you’re applying for.
Class 1 HGV Licences
A Class 1 HGV licence, also known as Category C+E, allows you to drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750kg.
This includes articulated lorries, tractor trailers, and multi-trailers. Class 1 licences are ideal for long-haul trucking and offer access to a broader range of job opportunities compared to Class 2 licences.
To obtain a Class 1 HGV licence, you may need to pass a medical examination to get your provisional licence. After that, you must pass a theory test and a hazard perception test, and complete a practical course which usually spans five days, with the final day including a practical assessment.
Recent changes to HGV licensing have made it easier to obtain a Category 1 HGV licence.
If your provisional licence was issued on or after November 15, 2021, you can now train directly in an articulated lorry without needing to pass in a large rigid lorry first. For provisional licences issued before this date, you will need to upgrade your licence.
To qualify for a Class 1 HGV licence, you generally need to meet the following requirements:
- Age: Over 18 years old
- Health: Good physical health with no conditions affecting your driving ability. A medical examination may be required.
- Theory And Hazard Perception Tests: Pass tests covering road rules, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Practical Tests: Includes the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) initial qualification test.
- Training: Covers safety, vehicle handling, load management, and specific skills for long-haul trucking.
- Additional Endorsements: You may need additional endorsements such as the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC).
Class 2 HGV Licences
If long-haul driving isn’t your goal, and you don’t need to operate articulated vehicles or trailers, a Class 2 HGV licence might be more suitable.
A Class 2 licence (Category C) allows you to drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes but limits you to those with 8 wheels or fewer and no trailer. This type of licence is ideal for local and regional deliveries, waste management, and construction vehicles.
What Heavy Goods Vehicles Can I Drive?
If you’re only planning to drive a Category C large rigid lorry, you only need to qualify under Class 2.
However, bear in mind that with Class 1, you’ll be restricted to driving certain vehicles. The types of vehicles you can drive will depend on the one you used for your HGV Class 1 driving test.
If you passed your HGV Class 1 test in a large articulated lorry, you are qualified to drive:
• Medium-sized lorry (C1)
• Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
• Large rigid lorry (C)
• Large articulated lorry (CE)
If you passed your Class 1 test in a medium-sized lorry, you are qualified to drive:
• Medium-sized lorry (C1)
• Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
Which HGV Licence Is Best For Me?
Choosing the right HGV licence depends on your career aspirations, driving experience, and the type of work you’re seeking.
A Class 1 licence is best for those interested in long-haul trucking and transporting heavy loads. On the other hand, a Class 2 licence is ideal for local, short-distance, and regional deliveries.
