Understanding The Types Of HGV Licences
To drive a heavy goods vehicle (HGV), you’ll need the right HGV licence. There are two primary types of HGV licences, each covering different vehicle categories.
It’s important to ensure you have the correct licence for the job you’re applying for.
Class 1 HGV Licences
A Class 1 HGV licence, also known as Category C+E, allows you to operate vehicles that weigh over 7.5 tonnes with a trailer that exceeds 750kg. This category includes various vehicles like articulated lorries, tractor trailers, and multi-trailers.
Class 1 licences are ideal for long-haul transport and provide access to a broader range of job opportunities compared to Class 2 licences.
To obtain a Class 1 HGV licence, you’ll need to pass a medical examination to get your provisional licence. Following this, you must pass a theory test and a hazard perception test. You’ll also need to complete a practical course, typically lasting five days, with a final assessment on the last day.
Recent changes have simplified the process for obtaining a Category 1 HGV licence.
If your provisional licence was issued from November 15, 2021, you can now train directly in an articulated lorry (Category CE) without needing to pass in a large rigid lorry first. For provisional licences issued before this date, you’ll need to upgrade your licence.
Here’s what you need to achieve a Class 1 HGV licence:
- Age: Over 18 years old
- Health: Good physical health with no conditions affecting your driving ability. A medical examination may be required.
- Theory And Hazard Perception Tests: You’ll need to pass tests covering road rules, road signs, and safe driving practices.
- Practical Tests: Includes the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) initial qualification test.
- Training: Covers safety, vehicle handling, load management, and specific skills needed for long-haul trucking.
- Additional Endorsements: You might need endorsements like the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC).
Class 2 HGV Licences
If you’re not interested in long-haul driving and don’t need to operate articulated vehicles or trailers, a Class 2 HGV licence might be the right choice for you.
A Class 2 licence (Category C) allows you to drive vehicles over 7.5 tonnes, but with 8 wheels or fewer and no trailer. This type of licence is typically required for local and regional deliveries, waste management, and construction vehicles.
What Heavy Goods Vehicles Can I Drive?
If you don’t intend to drive anything larger than a Category C large rigid lorry, you only need to qualify for Class 2.
However, be aware that with Class 1, you’ll be restricted to driving certain vehicles. The types of vehicles you can drive will depend on the one you used for your HGV driving test.
If you hold a Class 1 licence and passed your test in a large articulated lorry, you’re qualified to drive:
• Medium-sized lorry (C1)
• Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
• Large rigid lorry (C)
• Large articulated lorry (CE)
If you passed your Class 1 test in a medium-sized lorry, you can drive:
• Medium-sized lorry (C1)
• Medium-sized lorry towing a trailer (C1E)
Which HGV Licence Is Best For Me?
Choosing the right HGV licence depends on your career aspirations and the type of driving you’re interested in.
A Class 1 licence is best for those aiming for long-haul trucking jobs and transporting heavy loads. On the other hand, if you’re interested in local, short-distance, or regional deliveries, a Class 2 licence may be more suitable.
