About The Class 1 Heavy Goods Vehicle (HGV) Licence
A Class 1 (or Category C+E) HGV licence qualifies the holder to drive vehicles weighing over 7.5 tonnes with a trailer over 750kg. This category comprises a wide range of vehicles such as articulated lorries, tractor trailers, and multi-trailers.
Class 1 licences are suitable for long-haul transport and offer the licence holder access to a broader range of HGV job roles than a Class 2 licence.
To achieve a Class 1 HGV licence, you may need to pass a medical examination to get your provisional licence.
You will then need to pass two tests: a theory test and a hazard perception test. Usually, you will also be required to participate in a 5-day practical course in the articulated vehicle, with a final assessment on the last day of the course.
Due to HGV licensing changes, it is now easier than ever to achieve a Category 1 HGV licence.
If your provisional licence was issued from 15th November 2021, you can now learn to drive in an articulated lorry (Category CE) without having to first pass in a large rigid lorry (Category C). If your provisional licence was issued before 15th November 2021, you will need to first upgrade your provisional licence.
Requirements to achieve a Class 1 HGV licence include:
• Age – Over 18 years old
• Health – Good physical health, with no physical health issues that would interfere with your ability to drive safely. You may need to undergo a medical examination to prove your state of fitness
• Theory And Hazard Perception Tests – You will be required to pass the theory and hazard perception tests, which cover a range of areas including road rules, road signs, and safe driving practices
• Practical Tests – These include the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC) initial qualification test
• Training – Training covers safety, vehicle handling, and load management, as well as specific skills required for long-haul trucking
• Additional Endorsements – You may be required to obtain additional endorsements such as the Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (DCPC).
What Heavy Goods Vehicles Can I Drive?
With a Class 1 HGV licence, you will only be qualified to drive certain vehicles – which vehicles you can drive will depend on the type of vehicle you passed your HGV driving test in.
